The entire eastern perimeter is vacant alluvial fan, overlooked by the 10,000’ Koh-i-Safi range. If you can keep insurgents with mortars, rocket artillery etc off the ridges overlooking the airfield - a minor tactical task that the well-equipped US military seemed to have little trouble with - well, that’s your strategic airbase, whence you organize all strategic operations, sensitive inputs and outputs: troop surges, special ops teams, and plane loads of ammo, freshly printed Afghan currency and the like.
The USSR and Afghanistan shared a land border, via the Uzbekistan SSR, so when the Soviets left in 1989, the ground troops and their equipment mostly withdrew overland. But I assure you everything else flew out of Bagram.
You don’t just abandon Bagram and try to run a staged withdrawal out of Kabul airport. Populous urban tenements crowd the entire length of the runway on both sides and the west end. Low walls ‘protect’ it, if and when there’s a functional state security apparatus.
To withdraw, you first get everything and everyone superfluous out of far-flung provincial bases to either Bagram or Kabul; then out of Kabul; then, at the very last minute, in the dead of night, out of Bagram.
During the withdrawal process, you also proactively smite TF out of insurgents interfering with your activities. It’s a matter of record that Trump was firmly committed to that. You don’t have to be a f***ing general to understand any of this.
